AAS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the understanding and prevention of suicide. AFSP was founded in by concerned scientists, business and community leaders, and Survivors of Suicide Loss in an effort to support the research and education needed to prevent suicide. This organization also offers educational programs and conferences for survivors, mental health professionals, physicians, and the public. Every year in the United States, more than 45, people take their own lives. Every one of these deaths leaves an estimated six or more “suicide survivors” — people who’ve lost someone they care about deeply and are left with their grief and struggle to understand why it happened. The grief process is always difficult, but a loss through suicide is like no other, and the grieving can be especially complex and traumatic.

Suicide is death caused by injuring oneself with the intent to die. A suicide attempt is when someone harms themselves with the intent to end their life, but they do not die as a result of their actions. Several factors can increase the risk for suicide and protect against it. Suicide is connected to other forms of injury and violence, and causes serious health and economic consequences.

For example, suicide risk is higher among people who have experienced violence, including child abuse, bullying, or sexual violence. Suicide and other forms of violence can be prevented by using a public health approach that addresses risk and protective factors for multiple types of violence.

There are many support groups across New Hampshire for those who have lost a family member, friend or relative to suicide. While some groups are peer-facilitated and others are led by professional counselors, all are comprised of fellow survivors who can offer great comfort through conversation and discussion of issues unique to bereavement of suicide. There are also general grief support groups for both adults and children that are not specific to suicide but address issues of grief and loss.

Internet support groups offer another option for people who live in rural areas or prefer tapping into support from home or at different hours. There is no blueprint for how we react to and cope after a suicide. We each have our own relationship with the person who died and we all grieve in our own way and at our own pace. Losing the person you have chosen to share your life with can destroy your hopes and expectations for the future. When you lose a partner to suicide it is not unusual to experience strong feelings of rejection or betrayal — a sense that they broke your shared commitment, that they chose to leave you or that they did not feel that they could look to you for help.

You are likely to have had one of the closest relationships with the deceased — physically and emotionally. If there were no indications of their intentions, you may question yourself about how you could not have noticed or feel that they deceived you by hiding it. Or if there were indications, you may feel guilty that you did not do enough. You may find yourself questioning other aspects of your relationship and worrying about how others perceive you as a partner or spouse.

This may be unintentional but sometimes people voice explicitly where they think that the blame lies. If you have children, you may find that you have to manage your experience of grief as a spouse alongside supporting your children through the loss of their parent.

Finding Help After My Father’s Suicide

Also known as Survivor Day, the day was designated by the United States Congress as a day on which those affected by suicide can join together for healing and support. It was determined that Survivor Day would always fall on the Saturday before American Thanksgiving, as the holidays are often a difficult time for suicide loss survivors. Each year, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention supports hundreds of large and small Survivor Day events around the world, in which survivors of suicide loss come together to find connection, understanding, and hope through their shared experience.

While each event is unique, all feature an AFSP-produced documentary which offers a message of growth, resilience and connection. When you have experienced the death of a family member or loved one by suicide you can feel overwhelmed, desperately sad, lonely, angry, confused, guilty and somehow responsible. We know that the bereavement associated with a suicide death is different than other deaths; there is the suddenness of the death and there is often no easy — or clear — explanation as to why suicide was seen as a choice. It is always important to get help in the aftermath of a suicide death. That help might be from a therapist who specializes in grief and loss; it might be through a support group specifically designed for individuals who are dealing with the loss of a loved one to suicide.

A loved one’s suicide can be emotionally devastating. Use healthy coping strategies — such as seeking support — to begin the journey to healing and acceptance. When a loved one dies by suicide, emotions can overwhelm you. Your grief might be heart wrenching. At the same time, you might be consumed by guilt — wondering if you could have done something to prevent your loved one’s death. As you face life after a loved one’s suicide, remember that you don’t have to go through it alone.

You might continue to experience intense reactions during the weeks and months after your loved one’s suicide — including nightmares, flashbacks, difficulty concentrating, social withdrawal and loss of interest in usual activities — especially if you witnessed or discovered the suicide. Many people have trouble discussing suicide, and might not reach out to you. This could leave you feeling isolated or abandoned if the support you expected to receive just isn’t there.

Additionally, some religions limit the rituals available to people who’ve died by suicide, which could also leave you feeling alone. You might also feel deprived of some of the usual tools you depended on in the past to help you cope. The aftermath of a loved one’s suicide can be physically and emotionally exhausting.
